Photo of Diane deGroat, an author illustrator who visits schools

Diane deGroat is the author-illustrator of the "Gilbert and Friends" series. Her picture books about the beloved opossum include Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink, a New York Times Best Seller, and Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet.

Ten additional books are in this series which has won three state Children's Choice awards.  In 2009, a spin-off series of I Can Read books debuted, offering new adventures for Gilbert and beginning readers.  For older children, her "Annie Pitts" chapter books follow the adventures of a third grader as she strives to become famous, but misadventures prevail.

Ms. deGroat has also illustrated over 125 books for other authors, including Lois Lowry, Johanna Hurwitz, and Eve Bunting.  She has shown her work at the Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibit, and is currently represented by R. Michelson Gallery.

Programs -

For grades K and 1: I will read my latest Gilbert book (not yet in stores), or one of your old favorites.  I've scanned the pages and can project the art as I read.  Then I add a short program about the other Gilbert books and talk about the studio and materials.  This session can be 30-45 minutes.

For grades 2 and up: My powerpoint presentation explains everything you've ever wanted to know about children's book creation, beginning with a tour of my studio as I explain materials and equipment.  You'll learn how an illustration is conceived, sketched, and painted, step-by-step. How do I find my models? What kind of research do I use?  How has modern technology changed my style of working?  An overview of the writing process is covered, as well as an explanation about the editor's role.  This presentation is 45 to 60 minutes, and can be interactive for smaller groups.

Fee: $1500 per day, for a maximum of four sessions. This can be at one school or shared with another nearby school for a half day in each.  Please check the website www.dianedegroat.com for details and contact information.
