Diane
deGroat is the author-illustrator of the "Gilbert and Friends" series.Her picture books about the beloved
opossum include Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink, a New York Times Best Seller,
and Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet.
Ten additional books are in this series
which has won three state Children's Choice awards.In 2009, a spin-off series of I Can Read books debuted,
offering new adventures for Gilbert and beginning readers.For older children, her "Annie Pitts" chapter books follow the adventures of a third grader as she strives to become
famous, but misadventures prevail.
Ms.
deGroat has also illustrated over 125 books for other authors, including Lois
Lowry, Johanna Hurwitz, and Eve Bunting.She has shown her work at the Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibit,
and is currently represented by R. Michelson Gallery.
Programs -
For
grades K and 1: I will read my latest Gilbert book (not yet in stores), or one
of your old favorites.I've
scanned the pages and can project the art as I read.Then I add a short program about the other Gilbert books and
talk about the studio and materials.This session can be 30-45 minutes.
For
grades 2 and up: My powerpoint presentation explains everything you've ever
wanted to know about children's book creation, beginning with a tour of my
studio as I explain materials and equipment.You'll learn how an illustration is conceived, sketched, and
painted, step-by-step. How do I find my models? What kind of research do I
use?How has modern technology
changed my style of working?An
overview of the writing process is covered, as well as an explanation about the
editor's role.This presentation
is 45 to 60 minutes, and can be interactive for smaller groups.
Fee: $1500 per day, for a maximum of four sessions. This can be at one school or
shared with another nearby school for a half day in each.Please check the website
