John Steven Gurney has illustrated two of America's best-loved chapter book series, The A to Z Mysteries and The Bailey School Kids. He is the author and illustrator of the picture book Dinosaur Train. The goal of his presentation is to help students understand the thought process involved in creating an illustration. Every illustration tells a story, but how? The elements that make any illustration effective are Character Design, Lighting, Color, and Perspective. John Gurney uses a PowerPoint presentation and actual paintings to show his illustration development process, which includes concept sketch, visual research, refined sketch, and painting. John Gurney's presentation is informative, and quite funny. He always closes by drawing a large caricature of someone from the audience.
John adapts his presentation to the age of the audience. He also offers a variety of cartooning workshops and caricature sessions. His Meanest Hound Around book and Dinosaur Train are prime examples of his beautiful artwork and creative approach to children's illustrations. Combining these with his highly acclaimed series The Bailey School Kids and his books in the A to Z Mysteries series, John Steven Gurney's presentation is sure to entertain your group.
"Everyone loved how you weaved the reading and writing in with the drawing process. And the series of steps you have to take to get to the final product! You opened their eyes to a whole new world that is attainable if you think it." Reading Specialist, Levittown, Pa.
