Why Have an Author Visit?
Hosting an author visit is one of the best things you can do for your students because it connects kids to books in a way much more powerful than simply reading and sharing them can; it gives kids an appreciation of the process that creates the books they love; it offers students the opportunity to interact with someone who has made writing and illustrating her career, thereby modeling this possibility for the kids; and it supports literacy efforts in the school.

Assemblies
I get kids excited about reading, writing and the creative process through a funny and exciting presentation. Using an animated slideshow and iMovie, I reveal how an author/illustrator works and lives. I cover the journey of an idea to a published work, how many revisions a book goes through, and the pat I took to get to this point in my life.

| K-3 (Classroom visits or Assemblies)
Tailored to each age group, I present a highly interactive illustrating and storytelling session. As the children help me write a story, volunteers join me up front where I ask each to make a different emotional expression. I draw their expressions on the faces of the characters from my books and we create a new narrative story with emphasis on beginning, middle and end.

4th and 5th Grade Workshops
Writing workshops involve brainstorming, plotting, and character development. In illustration workshops I show kids tips and tricks to teach them how to see so they're able to illustrate the story they've written or simply achieve confidence in their artistic abilities. Students leave with a story and/or illustrations that motivate more writing and exploration of their own creative processes.

| Program for Writers and Illustrators
I can speak about different stages and areas of publishing process, from submissions to editing, to marketing and promotion. I'm passionate about this business and I love sharing what I've learned.

As it turns out, all my other, seemingly unrelated jobs in public relations and advertising have all added to my knowledge (and my stints running my own business, selling cheese and pushing a mop as a janitor in a disco, have of course added to my enthusiasm for this particular job!)

Group Size: the smaller the audience the more individualized attention each child receives, however, I can present to pretty much any size group. It will depend more on the host's needs and budget whether I go into a classroom, combine a couple of classes, or do a multi-grade assembly. Note: Do not be fooled into thinking that just because my books target a young audience, my presentation is for the same audience. It's about the creative process and supporting literacy and elementary students of all ages benefit from my program. Scheduling: I offer three one-hour presentations per day, or four 30-minute sessions if ONLY presenting to kindergartners. Virtual Visits: I am available for $150 for a live, one hour chat using Instant Messenger. I can also do a video chat, so if you're interested let me know! Honorarium: For more info please email me at site@katiedavis.com, visit my website www.katiedavis.com, or click here to download a pdf of my contract.
