About Us

IllustratorAuthor.com - your link to illustrators & authors

Each year, I visit more than 50 schools across the US where I share my techniques for thinking, writing and drawing more creatively. Humor is an important part of my presentations and I find that many reluctant readers and writers (and behavior "problems") respond well to humor that challenges and delights them. Perhaps the most unique part of my presentations is the step-by-step drawing instructions I share. Each student leaves my presentation with three pages of original cartoons that he/she has created. It's a HUGE boost to the students' creative confidence and there are direct tie-ins to your state educational standards. You can find complete info on my web site: www.mikeartell.com

I have written/illustrated more than 35 books. I concentrate primarily in two areas: science and humor. That may seem like an odd combination, but I've found that by including both science and language arts into my presentations, I'm able to capture the interest and attention of many reluctant readers/writers. Many of my books have won awards. You may be familiar with my book PETITE ROUGE - A CAJUN RED RIDING HOOD which won the 2004 Louisiana Young Readers Choice Award and was a finalist for the 2005 North Carolina Children's Book Award. It has also become a musical theatre production which has toured across the US and in London.

My fee is $1500 per day for three presentations. Travel (from the New Orleans area), lodging and meals are additional. Complete details about me and my books, school visits and in-service workshops are available on my web site: www.mikeartell.com . And while you’re there, be sure to go to the "Mike's books" page and download the FREE audio of me reciting PETITE ROUGE with a Cajun accent. It's great fun!
