Robin Brickman

Robin Brickman is the award-winning illustrator of books about creativity and natural science. She has decades of professional experience as an artist and workshop leader.

Beginning with the book "A Log's Life," Robin developed a unique method of paper sculpture.  In addition to her children's picture book illustrations, her artwork has been shown in museums and galleries across the country, including The New York State Museum, The National Aviary, The Smithsonian Institution, The Berkshire Museum, The Bennington Museum, The New Britain Museum of Art, The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, The Norman Rockwell Museum, and The Mazza Museum.

Ms. Brickman's hands-on school workshops encourage students to make a connection between art, science, and reading. They focus on natural science illustration and are adapted for students of all ages and abilities.

I have illustrated these books (among others):

  • I Am An Artist
  • A Log's Life
  • Starfish
  • Beaks!
  • One Night In The Coral Sea
  • Wings

Ms. Brickman's books have received the following awards and listings:

  • An Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2009
  • National Science Teachers Association & the Children's Book Council
  • John Burroughs List of Nature Books for Young Readers, 2006 and 1997
  • Charlotte Award Nominee for 2008 (New York State Reading Association).
  • Giverny Award: The Best Children's Science Book, 2000
  • Gold Award, 3 Dimensional Art Directors and Illustrators Awards Show, 1997
  • IRA Teachers' Choice, 2003
  • Junior Library Guild Selection, 2002
  • Reading Rainbow Selection, in 1994 & 1997
  • Child Study Association Children's Book of the Year, 1993

Robin can come to your school for a workshop or residency to demonstrate the connection between art and science. She begins with information about researching and planning a children's picture book. Then, she demonstrates her unique sculpted 3-D paper technique. Ms. Brickman can work with students in any grade level to explore some of the artistic techniques she has developed. Her highly regarded program can result in a spectacular mural at the school, or in smaller take-home art projects. Each visit is planned according to the school's needs. The materials necessary for these workshops are readily available in most classrooms. Readily available materials are used: paper, scissors, crayons, and colored pencils.

Robin's Programs:

The Community Mural: This is Ms. Brickman's signature program, resulting in an art and science project for all ages.  In this workshop Robin explains how she creates the paintings for her books and demonstrates her 3-D sculpted art techniques. Then each student has an opportunity to make his or her own sculpted paper plants and animals, based on a natural habitat or theme. Thereafter, a mural is created which includes all of the student's creations.  The mural is a lasting project that stays at the school, library, or museum.

Wearable Art:  In this class students learn about Robin's sculpted paper technique and make paper jewelry of flowers or small creatures. This program is best suited for smaller numbers of participants, such as an after-school event. It is appropriate for all ages, especially teenagers and adults!

I am an Artist and You are and Artist, Too! This is a workshop based on Pat Collins and Robin's acclaimed children's book about creativity. Especially suitable for younger audiences, this is a take-home project.

Making A Picture Book: Teaches beginners how to write and illustrate a book based on their name.

Robin plans each visit individually. Supplies are simple materials such as white and colored paper, scissors, crayons, and colored pencils.  The cost, for four classroom sessions a day is $1,200, plus travel and accommodations.  Robin's school booking agent is Janet Zade for more information, or go to Robin's website: www.RobinBrickman.com

Robin Brickman is a Massachusetts Cultural Council Creative Teaching Partner and BOCES approved.

Comments about Robin's school workshops:

"Robin Brickman's visit to our school was unforgettable! She has a natural talent not only for illustration, but for engaging students of all ages. Robin's workshop was hands-on. Thanks to her, we can all feel proud as we gaze at our mural and see that she brought out the best in all of us. Robin Brickman's visit made an impression on our school, staff, and students that will last a lifetime!"

K. Alexander, Quarton Elementary School, Birmingham, MI

"Kudos to you, dear Robin Brickman! For a wonderful artist you're the one we're pickin'! You helped us create A LOG'S LIFE mural; you even helped us fashion a flying red squirrel. You showed us how to cut out a butterfly, So its wings look symmetrical to every eye. A wolf and a spider, a weasel and a snake, You helped us with them all, for goodness sake!"

J. Hammer and the 2nd and 6th grade students of The Otselic Valley School, NY
